Here are some of my favorite pieces in Claremont Museum of Art’s permanent collection. All I had with me than was my 35mm camera and some B&W Kodak Plus-X ISO 125 film. I get so use to the digital format, with the “instant gratification” I forget what it feels like to wait until the actual roll is finished and than seeing the outcome.

This is one of my favorite Finn Juhl designed chairs. This was the first chair Juhl designed for mass production. Manufactured by France & Son. Teak & leather materials. Although machine-made, it has very organic lines, comfortable and not to bad on the eyes either.

Here is another example of a Fred McDowell design home located here in Claremont, Ca. I like to think of Fred McDowell as the Joseph Eichler of Claremont (if I may). This house was one of the first Fred McDowell designs here in Claremont, built in 1955. The home was photographed by Julius Shulman and was featured in Sunset Magazine.

If your driving west on Foothill right before you hit Indian Hill Blvd. you can’t help but notice the Claremont School of Theology , at least I can’t anyway. Just walking through this college you can get a lesson on mid-century architecture. Known for his International Style, Edward Durell Stone designed the building’s with no interior corridors for easy access to the outdoors. The Kresge Chapel is the building that stands out to me the most. The natural lighting inside is amazing. Classic Claremont Modernism at it’s finest!

I did a photo shoot this past weekend of my friend’s clothing company 1939, which is a gentleman’s brand based here in California. Photos taken with a Hasselblad. Film is definitely not dead in my book, especially when it comes to black & white film. Check out the 1939 website for more info.

Ok…I was quite shocked when I saw this. The Gillen house designed by Richard Neutra located on the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest sits on a 2 acre lot and was built in 1955. The asking price of this gem was $299,000. On the market for 2 months and is now pending. This would have been a fun project to take on. One problem though, the property is astride the San Andreas Earthquake Fault, but I would chance the “BIG” one to hit, to be able to live in a Neutra for $299,000!!

I’m 99.9% sure this is a Criley & McDowell designed home because I have a drawing done by Fred McDowell for this exact house. The house is located in Ontario, Ca. I have always admire it when passing by. Classic post and beam construction, the carport design really stands out to me. I love the way architects from this period incorporated the carports with the design of the house.
